Negative Split Running Strategy for Better Race Finishes

A practical pacing model for 5K to half marathon athletes.

Negative splitting means finishing faster than you start. It reduces early lactate spikes and protects form in the final third.

Start first quarter 2-4% slower than average target pace. Hold middle half at target pace, then progress in final quarter if breathing and mechanics stay stable.

Use progression sessions: easy start, controlled middle, strong finish. Keep effort honest rather than chasing watch pace in bad conditions.

Most runners fade because they race their ambition in the first 10 minutes.
